Chapter 2

For a moment, I see emotions flicker across my birth mother’s expression. Before I can decipher them, they’re concealed.

“Mr. Mestas,” Joseph’s greets my best friend, breaking the awkward silence that descended when I didn’t respond to my mother.

“Mr. Cohen,” Joey returns, eyeing our ex-physics teacher warily.

If this situation wasn’t so awkward, I’d laugh. As it is, I just shoot Joey a half smile, then address my Light Fallen. “Where have you guys been?”

“In a meeting,” Gabe replies. I see him eyeing Joey.

Is he jealous?

The thought of the handsome Fallen being jealous of my best guy friend is flattering and amusing. Despite years of opportunity, Joey and I have never, ever crossed the line of our friendship. I never wanted to, and I’m pretty sure Joey was never tempted either.

The fact Gabe feels at all threatened makes me want to go over there and wrap him in a big hug. If we were alone, I’d even give him a kiss.

Instead, I ask, “What was the meeting about?”

Gabe eyes land on me. They soften. “That’s actually what we came to speak about.”

“Oh?” I look between Gabe, Joseph, and my birth mother. All three watch me expectantly. “What is it?”

“This is a discussion best had in private,” Dina says.

“Enough said.” Joey hops to his feet. “I’ll see you later, Ronnie.” He’s out the door before I muster a response.

A sense of unease fills me as I take in the three Fallens’ serious expressions. I stand, subconsciously knowing I won’t want to be sitting down for this conversation.

“Is it Zeke and Adrian?” Did something happen to my other Fallen soulmates?

“As far as we know, Zeke and Adrian are fine,” Joseph answers immediately.

“You haven’t heard anything?” My heart lodges in my throat as my head conjures countless horrible possibilities of what happened to my Dark Fallen after the attack at the council.

“No news is good news,” Dina says. “Trust me. If something happened to their two most powerful Fallen, the Dark Council would not be able to keep it a secret.”

Her words are a slight comfort, but nothing but hearing Adrian and Zeke are okay from their own mouths will free me of my worry.

“Then what do you need to tell me?”

Joseph and Gabe share a look. I cross my arms and frown. I hate when they do that.

Dina is the first to speak. “First, I wanted to say I am sorry for all the trouble you’ve experienced since your birthday.” She references my eighteenth birthday. The day my angelic signature became detectable, and the day yancor demons first tried to kill me.

In the few weeks since that day, I’ve been kidnapped more than once, attacked by demons several times, and taken from my home in Valley Lake to avoid more danger. Basically, my life has been a shit show.

“I knew asking Odette to place a Sorcerer’s Mark on you would constrain most of your powers,” Dina continues, “but I also believed it would mask you from being detected by our kind. I apologize my choice left you in danger.
